As Loathsome As It May Be, Donald Trump Is Riding High in Republican Politics
The popular Christian/humanist pastor John Pavlovitz writes:
It’s simply demoralizing sharing a country with people who think Donald Trump is someone worth emulating: to be surrounded by that kind of moral inversion every single day, to be continually encountering such cruelty. It’s a source of profound and sustained grieving to believe that everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and afforded opportunity—and to know how many simply do not share that belief.
Indeed. If this were in the process of fading away into the past, it wouldn’t be so “demoralizing,” to use John’s word. But, by the looks of it, the entire Republican party is resigned to the fact that the GOP is unifying around Donald Trump, at least until the 2022 midterms. There are even Republicans who voted for impeachment who are desperately trying to pull that decision back and pretend it didn’t happen.
All this, of course, is because of the intense loyalty that vast swaths of people in the central and southern parts of the country have to the ex-president. As incredible as it appears, they see him as a man of honor and a true patriot, one constantly under attack from the fake news industry. They’d be proud to see their children become the type of person he is.
Thus, if you’re running for office in Oklahoma and you’re not aligned with Trump, you may as well drop out of the race and back into personal injury law, or whatever you were doing before you decided to enter politics.
It’s not a happy occasion for the United States.
