Renewable Energy “Miracle?”
Nobel Laureate economist Paul Krugman seems to believe that renewable energy has won the day, or is at least well on its way. Yes, the price of electricity per kilowatt-hour has become quite attractive in certain locations, but, from here, it looks like we have huge challenges in front of us:
• The integration of intermittent sources into the grid-mix
• The high cost of energy storage
• Limited power transmission
• Political pressure brought about by the fossil fuel industry
In the article, he says that the development of renewable energy has been more about luck than our collective concern for the environment, and that’s most certainly true, but Krugman is far more bullish in this arena than I am.
