California’s Gubernatorial Recall Election
I’d like to understand the process by which Larry Elder became the top Republican candidate to replace California’s governor Gavin Newsom if, in the unlikely event he is recalled. I understand that he curried favor with a number of wealthy donors, but none of this makes sense.
Let’s start with the fact that this is California, not Alabama. Biden beat Trump in 2020 by a margin just under 2:1. That’s because most folks from these parts have progressive values.
So, through whatever means, along comes Elder. How much appetite do you think Californians have for banning abortion? Avid support of Donald Trump? Removing COVID-19 restrictions? The rejection of science? Eliminating climate change mitigation strategies because our new governor thinks global warming is a “myth?”
We’ve had six governors since 1967, and four of them have been Republicans. Historically, we’ve been fine on the GOP, but all that vanished over the last four years, when people like Trump (and Elder) came along and pushed the party into a place of utter absurdity.
I grant there is opposition to COVID restrictions on the part of some of our entrepreneurs and parents of school children. But how much? This is nonsense.
