Don’t Join the Book Burners
The banning of “controversial” books from our schools’ curricula is a horrific development in American education–as if we needed yet one more.
As suggested here, intelligent and honest people don’t believe there is gain to be made from keeping big, perhaps unsettling ideas away from young people.
Some people want to raise a generation of people who are incapable of critical thinking and expressing outrage when our country commits atrocities, in the belief that this is an effective way to Make America Great Again. It’s a scary thought.
Ever since Trump came onto the political scene, people have been comparing him to Hitler. Of course, that’s a quick route to getting ridiculed. Yet it wasn’t that long ago that the Nazis were banning books that, they believed, would stimulate the German people to challenge authority, and block their fascist agenda. Communist Russia went the in same direction.
Let’s hope we can move forward to a day when we can all confront the hard truths of the world around us, and what we can do to make this a better place for all of us. Putting blinders on our children is a huge step backwards.
