Ohio Supreme Court Says No To Republican Attempt To Gerrymander
In rendering Republican gerrymandering asunder, the Ohio Supreme Court demonstrated its understanding of the 14th and 15th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that guarantees every American citizen an equal right.
Anyone could have seen this coming. The language in the 15th Amendment is completely unambiguous: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude.”
Now, one could say that the electoral college is a colossal breakdown of this principle. In choosing a U.S. president, the votes of the people in Wyoming (1 electoral vote per 193K popular votes) count almost four times what ours are worth here in California (1 electoral vote per 727K popular votes).
It is for this reason that the days of the electoral college are numbered, or at least, that is the hope of those who value democracy.
