Madeleine Albright Helps Us Remember that Trump Committed Treason
The passing of Madeleine Albright reminds us of exactly how blatantly treasonous Trump’s behavior was, even early in his term. On her show Fresh Air, Terry Gross asked Albright in a 2018 interview what she would have done had she been Secretary of State in 2016, when the entirety of the U.S. intelligence community averred that Russia had tampered in the election, and actively helped bring the former president to power.
She said, in essence, that the president and every senior government executive connected with international relations and security should have pressured Russia to a) admit what they had done, and b) promise never to do it again.
Instead, as we all remember, Trump took Putin at his word when the Russian president said that his country did not interfere in the election. I.e., he chose to believe the leader of an enemy nation over every single member of his own intelligence.
Former GOP Sen. Chuck Hagel, who served as secretary of defense under former President Barack Obama, told CNN that “President Trump failed America today. He failed America, our interests, in every way.”
“Failing America” really doesn’t come close. Trump became president by accepting the help of an avowed enemy. That’s known as “treason.”
