What It Means to “Defund the Police”
This is what’s known as defunding the police. It means calling the police off of incidents in which no physical force is required, allowing them to focus the entirety of their efforts where someone could be injured of killed.
See what the “Goods News Movement” has to say about this, below. Btw, if zero of 2200 incidents required police backup, that’s remarkable. In most cases, it’s at least 1%.
This (Denver’s program) is working all over the country.
Of 2,200 cases this team in Denver didn’t need to call the police for backup even 1 time. Now they are going to expand the program by 500%.
The truth is this:
1. All mental health calls should be handled this way.
2. All calls for the homeless should be handled this way.
3. 99% of substance abuse calls should be handled this way.
4. Most calls involving children should be handled this way.
5. And 99% of ALL calls that don’t involve a deadly weapon should be handled this way.
@GrassrootsLaw we are trying to teach people that one essential way to lessen police violence is to drastically decrease the number of times police interact with people.
Currently it’s tens of millions of times per year. It needs to plummet. And those funds need to be used just like this. from @goodnews_movement
