Progressives Scratching Heads at Attorney General Merrick Garland’s Announcement

Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday announced a new office at the Justice Department that will focus exclusively on environmental justice.

The office, which will prioritize low-income communities that have been hit hard by pollution and contamination, was launched in partnership with the Environmental Protection Agency.

Well, that’s good news, but aren’t most of us asking why he’s doing anything else than putting an end to the coup attempt?  One-third of Americans believe the 2020 election was rigged and have no reason to believe in the integrity of our democracy going forward.

We live in a country in which, if Republicans lose an election, the majority of the party’s voters will maintain that they were the victims of massive voter fraud.  This in turn will set in motion voter registration and ballot registry schemes that overwhelmingly favor the GOP.

Now, it’s a fair question to ask if criminal prosecution of the architects of the insurrection is likely to change the minds of the people who already believe that Donald Trump is being treated unfairly.  I would only submit that the presentation of reams of evidence to the effect that Trump a) had no evidence that the election was stolen, b) orchestrated a series of grossly illegal actions to overturn the results, and c) is now convicted of treason is bound to get a considerable amount of attention, even from the most hardcore morons that comprise his base.

Our nation levels its gaze on Mr. Garland as the man at the very center of restoring sanity to a country torn apart by ignorance, hate, and disinformation.

Environmental justice is an important priority, but when the house is ablaze, the only priority is making sure everyone’s safe and extinguishing the fire.
