UN Chief to New College Grads: To Help Save the Planet, ‘Don’t Work for Climate Wreckers’
“Use your talents to drive us towards a renewable future,” U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres said in a commencement address to Seton Hall University graduates.
There are many encouraging social phenomena which are pushing in the direction of a sustainable future. Among them, public sentiment about the importance of climate change mitigation is growing rapidly, as shown by the steep adoption curve of electric vehicles.
Young people are those with both the most at stake, and those whose lifelong contributions make the greatest difference. Folks who are just now entering the work force have decisions to make that will have a profound effect on global warming and the long-term environmental damage that it ultimately wreaks.
That’s why it’s so nice to see the U.N. Secretary-General reminding a youthful audience that they have the capacity to choose not to be a part of the problem, as far as their life’s work is concerned.
If they do nothing else, they can keep their money and their time away from the forces that are knowingly destroying the planet for profit.
