Someone’s Gotta Win
Because of my wife’s interest in horse racing, I’ve been to the track many times, taking a shot at “handicapping,” or trying to determine the winner of a certain upcoming race based on the entrants’ past performances. Sometimes I’ll look at the records of “maiden” horses (those who have yet to win a race) and get the feeling that they are all so slow that it’s hard to imagine any of them winning– though, of course, one of them has to.
That’s the impression I get about the midterms. The Republicans’ platform contains things like total bans on abortion and a business-as-usual approach to the proliferation of assault weapons that are being used to massacre our children on a regular basis. Both of these positions are grossly unpopular.
Moreover, we have the Big Lie. As time goes on, it’s becoming increasingly obvious, even to Trump’s base, that there is no evidence of significant voter fraud, and thus, they’ve been duped. People don’t like that.
On the other hand, Democrats are blamed (largely without merit) for the inflation that is devaluing people’s paychecks. Biden’s approval rating really is terrible, just a hair over 40%.
Nonetheless, one of these parties will gain congressional seats in November. I promise.
