The Lack of “Socratic Wisdom” Is So Glaring in Today’s Society
At left we see the reason that Socrates is often regarded as Western Civilization’s greatest philosopher.
Being aware of how little one really knows requires a profound level of humility. I’m sure it was rare back in his day, and it’s almost completely absent in our public forums today, at least in the U.S.
In fact, now we have a relatively recent theory in psychology, the Dunning-Kruger Effect, a type of cognitive bias in which people with little knowledge of a particular subject tend to grossly overestimate their level of understanding in that arena.
Thus, we have the MAGA crowd, featuring tens of millions of experts on constitutional law, epidemiology, and macroeconomics.
