Aren’t the Lives of Teachers Already Tough Enough?
They’re underpaid. Their efforts to discipline unruly students is thwarted at every turn. They bring in their own supplies, and spend countless unpaid hours on lesson planning.
It may have appeared that our society had done everything conceivable to remove teachers’ incentives and self-respect. But no.
Now we’re telling them how to teach, and prohibiting them from bringing up certain topics. And now we’re installing cameras in their classrooms to monitor their choice of language. Our message: you can’t be trusted alone with our kids.
Eventually, the whole climate surrounding public schooling will become so toxic that the entire education apparatus will simply disappear. Republicans will have achieved their goal: an entire generation of Americans completely incapable of critical thought, willing to believe anything, regardless of how inane and manifestly untrue.
