Admitting That We’ve Been Bamboozled
Occasionally, when I come across something like this quote from Carl Sagan, I ask myself how open I am to admitting to myself that I’ve been bamboozled.
Suppose it turns out that Fox News is right about Donald Trump, that he is an honest and effective servant of the American people who selflessly defended U.S. interests around the globe, who was hounded by the liberal elite, and ultimately removed when the Deep State rigged the 2020 election.
Suppose all these climate scientists, as the right-wing asserts, are fudging the data on global warming. Suppose their only real interest, as is alleged, is receiving large amounts of government grant money, and that the Earth’s climate really isn’t changing.
Could I swallow either of these extremely bitter pills?
Obviously, I don’t expect any of this to materialize, but Sagan has a point here nonetheless.
Imagine what’s going to happen if Trump goes on trial for treason, and his tens of millions of supporters are forced to process the evidence that is presented in court to the effect that their hero tried to overthrow the U.S. government.
To call this an interesting period in U.S. history is to put it mildly.
