Why Can’t We Have Common Sense Gun Laws?
OK, so what’s the difference between each of these incidents and the adoption of laws that will save the lives of our schoolchildren? Here, we’re talking about legislation that would shrink a multibillion-dollar industry, one that has an enormously powerful lobby behind it.
U.S. congresspeople have two priorities:
1) Ensuring that they’re re-elected, and
2) Doing what’s right for the American people.
In other words, anything that’s good for you and me actually can happen, but only if it makes re-election more likely.
IMO, we need to get used to this, and not act astonished when some Republican scolds a sports team for supporting gun reform, or advocates for limiting the number of school entrances, arming teachers, adding more guns to our population, and so forth.
Unless we’re able to get money out of politics, expecting any other form of behavior is like thinking your dog is going to start playing the piano.
