Trump Waging War Against the U.S.

The only change I would make here is to change the verb was to is.  This is happening “as we speak.”

Trump has a significant level of support, both in Congress and in the electorate.  When he says the election was stolen, most of the people who voted for him believe it, and most congressional Republicans pretend they do too.

Perhaps the worst part of all this is the fact that, regardless of how this turns out, and when it’s resolved to general satisfaction of the American people, it will have made a set of indelible marks on our democracy:

The idea that presidents are not elected by the people, but hidden cabals of Deep State agents, i.e., elections are rigged, and that voter fraud is rampant.

An innocent person who happens to be an unpopular president can be criminally prosecuted without any valid evidence whatsoever.

Imagine that this thing with Trump and the insurrection stays on track, and that a combination of the January 6th Committee and the Department of Justice prove eights ways from Sunday that Trump is guilty of, say, seditious conspiracy.  Again, there are going to be millions of people, armed to the teeth btw, who are going to believe that this was manufactured, and there isn’t a goddamn thing we can do about that.
