How Abortion Bans Affect Congressional Republicans
Remarkably, some high-level Republicans believe that abortion bans are not harmful for GOP politics.
Let’s begin with a fact: The vast majority of Americans support a woman’s right to choose abortion in all or most circumstances, and, obviously, women are more adamant in their opinions than men.
How is this not supposed to translate into votes against Republicans, who have worked so hard to ban abortions in all cases, including the rape of children, incest, and the almost certain death of the mother?
There are, of course, highly visible political issues in which public opinion is valueless; gun control is an excellent example. 91% of voters favor mandatory background checks for prospective gun owners, yet legislation in this vein cannot even be discussed in Congress, for fear of corrupt career-ending reprisals from the NRA.
But here there is no huge lobbying group; it’s just the vast majority of the men and women of America vs. the Christian ultra-right-wing of the GOP.
