Bernie Sanders, Who Honestly Stands for Environmental and Social Justice, Might Run for the U.S. Presidency?

Bernie Sanders, Who Honestly Stands for Environmental and Social Justice, Might Run for the U.S. Presidency? There is no doubt that, were he to run for president, Independent Party superstar Bernie Sanders would garner a great deal of support, for any or all of the six reasons that the author of this article suggests.   Perhaps the most compelling is the first: he wants money out of politics.

Even the true sheep among U.S. voters somehow understand that We The People have an ever-decreasing voice in government.  Most of us–even those who may not be paying too close attention–are deeply concerned about the most recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions, which empower corporations and super-rich individuals to spend as much as they’d like to influence our elections in any direction they choose.

Since my focus is on energy, it’s easy for me to say that the most egregious form of corruption of the legislative process comes from Big Oil, in its 24/7 battle  to maintain a playing field in which renewable energy finds itself at a distinct disadvantage.  Yet, people who study healthcare, agribusiness, financial regulation, or any other major arena, could make an equivalent claim.

Having said this, the last time I felt that an Independent might be a good idea, we wound up with two terms of George W. Bush, whose administration didn’t turn out terribly well by most standards – certainly if those standards have anything whatsoever to do with the health of the environment.  In any case, Bernie will most certainly get my vote if he runs.

    Nader version 2.0?

It’s possible that an independent run from a far-left candidate might be the only thing that could cause Hillary to lose. But make no mistake, if there was a successful candidate running from the far left, she would lose.

Gore is the icon of environmental advocacy, and because Gore had the audacity to not light himself on fire and tear out is hair and scream recklessly on the campaign trail (he was trying to campaign to win, not campaign to prove he was further left than anyone who had run before), we got one of the most environmentally reckless presidents in history… and we got two endless wars, trillions in additional debt, the second-worst economic collapse in the last century, etc…

Had Gore won, it’s probable that we would have virtually no debt, an additional 100% (at least) penetration of wind and likely 500% greater penetration of solar… and there would be at least 8 million more people working today.

Sometimes going with the safe but steady progress is better than gambling it all to sound your yawp.
