Say So Long To Citizens United

Say So Long To Citizens UnitedFrom an email I just got, sent with the pic you see at the left:  one of the billionaire Koch Brothers admitted on television last night that they want something in return for the millions they’re spending to elect Republicans in our 2016 elections. That’s despicable. This is another blatant example of the wealthy buying influence and taking unfair advantage of our political system.

That’s news?  These people are spending obscene amounts of money to buy our political process, but what? They want something in return? Really?

For the 38% of 2GreenEnergy readers who live outside the U.S. and therefore can’t imagine what I’m talking about and why I’m being so sarcastic, we live here under a Supreme Court decision called “Citizens United” that enables corporations to spend as much as they wish to influence our elections. Charles and David Koch, worth more than $40 billion apiece, owners of Koch Industries, are in the process of spending $300 million to make sure the 2016 election produces “leaders” (in a cruel and utterly meaningless sense of the term) who will support their business interests, which include coal-fired power plants and other profitable but eco-devastating businesses.

We’re trying hard to get this law off our books, but it’s taking a huge amount of effort. Fortunately, the demands of the people will not be defeated in this case, as I’ve written often.  Best of all, once “We the People” get this horrible law abolished, it will bring a sense of empowerment back to a society that had thought it had become totally impotent.

It will be one of the greatest days in U.S. history, and it’s right around the corner.  Tens of millions of Americans will be celebrating the day in high style, I can assure you of that.  And we’re on a considerable roll at this point.

I truly hope you are correct. Citizens United will do more to undermine democracy as we know it in the US than any other current law.
