The U.S. Is a Great, Albeit Weird, Place to Live
Today’s news provides a wonderful example of the absurdities and hypocrisies of life in the U.S., as our president visited Hiroshima, the site of the first of two atomic bomb detonations in World War II Japan, and offered a very clear message to the audience that had gathered for his speech: nuclear weapons are inhumane, and must never be deployed again.
The problem? As he spoke those words, his administration is busily investing $1 trillion in upgrading the U.S. nuclear arsenal, making such weapons far easier to use than they’ve ever been before.
In many ways, this is illustrative of a larger issue, i.e., the chasm between the Barack Obama he wishes he were, and the president he actually has been.
And here’s the ever larger issue: the difference between words and actions in a world dominated by empty rhetoric.
