“The Whole World’s Getting Warmer Every Day”
I happen to have an eclectic taste in music. Besides classical, I’m very into the fun and poignant stuff performed at music festivals around the U.S. The only problem I have with it is that it’s hard to name; it’s a blend of blues, folk, bluegrass, singer/song-writer, acoustic, Americana, ska, etc.—some of which overlap one another; I’ll admit, this is confusing.
In any case, I came across this little gem yesterday, the very first song I’ve ever heard on climate change. Here’s a sample verse; I hope you’ll find it to be clever.
As the polar icecaps slowly melt away
The ocean’s getting deeper, rising higher every day
Say goodbye Miami Beach but your old age you’ll enjoy
If you purchase beach-front property in Southern Illinois
Enjoy.
Hi Craig,
I’ve always loved songs of protest with political and social observations. Somehow combining music lessens the irritation of “preachy” lyrics.
But although they’re fun, they are also hymns and battle anthem propaganda to increase the devotion of ” true believers” and block out any nagging doubts.
I’m always a little worried when people claim there is no need to “debate ” any issue. This is especially worrying when concerning issues of science. Science should be a matter of continual debate, a constant search for new explanations, and never ending challenging of “accepted facts”.
In a recent article you posted a graph. I was a little disappointed to note that when the methodology behind the graphs conclusion was shown to be erroneous, you remained silent.
Now maybe that’s because you don’t feel it important, or you don’t wish to detract from your main message. I get that, and it’s reasonable for you not to bother debating every inconvenient detail.
Perhaps, I’m overly critical (it’s a fault of all annalists) but my concern is when advocates start to ignore inconvenient anomalies and inconsistencies so as not to interfere with passionately held beliefs, scientific integrity must be the loser.
As for the songs, well Bob Dylan the greatest of our generation commented ” hey, it’s absurd to believe that any performer has profound answers to the world’s problems” .
But like you, I still enjoy ’em 🙂
