How Big Is the Market for High-End Range-Extended Electric Vehicles?
Here, my colleague Jon LeSage reports on the rebirth of the Fisker Karma, called the Karma Revero, a super-luxury plug-in hybrid. Jon knows more about this than I do, but personally, I don’t pick this to do any better than it did the first time around.
It’s gorgeous to look at and sit in, but I don’t think the sticker price ($115,000) will be attractive, especially as the appeal of pure (battery) EVs continues to increase, a function of better range, lower price, more charging stations, etc.
From Green Car Reports: Scheduled to hit the market in late 2017 with a price tag of $35,000 before incentives and a range of 200 miles or more, the Tesla Model 3 aims to be the first true mass-market electric car. Its sales are targeted at 500,000 per year by 2020—fully 10 times the production rate of the $75,000-and-up Tesla Model S.
Is that going to put the squeeze on the Karma Revero? In a big way.
Entering the luxury EV market like this makes no more sense than offering a ketchup to compete against Heinz, or a sport shoe to compete against Nike. There’s a reason no one does that; it’s called “suicide.”
There is no need to speculate on the outcome. We can wait and see.
But that’s where the fun lies. 🙂 And it’s kinda what I do for a living….
