England Wants To Know What’s Up with Americans
2GreenEnergy super-supporter Gary Tulie writes from his office in Buckinghamshire (near London–pictured), England: Hi Craig. I hope you and your family are in good health. I can see you are busy writing about renewable energy, and against the current extremes of Republican politics. I can’t understand the anti-science agenda. Even if you doubt climate change, it is hard to doubt smog, hard to doubt the need for clean drinking water, and safe food, hard to argue against fuel economy standards which will help make the best use of a finite resource whilst leaving more cash in people’s pockets.
Great to hear from you. Yes, whenever I’m on a radio talk show and a climate denier calls in, I immediately suggest that we dismiss the idea of climate change altogether and speak to the myriad other issues associated with the consumption of fossil fuels, i.e., human health, long-term environmental damage, loss of biodiversity, etc.
Re: Americans’ acceptance of all this anti-science rhetoric, the only explanation I can offer is the vast level of ignorance that the current denizens of your 13 original colonies brought to the voting booth last November. To my amazement and chagrin, I live among 62 million people who will believe whatever our new president, who makes used car salesmen appear honest in comparison, tell them about science, the economy, national security issues, and essentially everything else. It’s appalling. I’m so embarrassed for our country, I can’t tell you.
Craig,
I’m not sure that Gary, despite being a nice guy, can really be said to speak for the rest of the 54,786,396 population of England !
I love the very pretty and picturesque photo, although most of the time the county endures the miserable English weather.
Yep. Been there.
Quite right Marcopolo. I speak only for myself, however I do think that most people given the choice would rather breath clean air than dirty air, drink clean water rather than dirty water, and eat food they can be confident is safe rather than food which is of unknown safety.
Of course in the USA, one of the most deadly toxic substances is lead, even if its lethality has more to do with velocity than toxicity. (Another subject on which the USA is very much an outlier in the Western world!)
