Climate Change Poses a Threat To Our Civilization’s Protection Against Climate Change
I’m sure most readers are aware of the stronghold called the Global Seed Vault, built about a decade ago and maintained with international cooperation in the arctic permafrost to enable humankind to regrow about one million species and cultivars of plants in the case of a man-made or natural disaster. Now, ironically, the vault itself is under threat…from climate change, which, one could say, is a kind of hybrid catastrophe of the man-made and natural.
As shown in the article linked above, the record high arctic temperatures in recent years have caused the permafrost to melt, exposing the roof and walls of the structure, an event which, at the time the vault was constructed, was unthinkable.
That’s the change associated with 10 years. Think of the changes humankind faces over the next 50-100 years. Then go get yourself a cold martini.
Craig,
Interesting news item, but you really should read more than just the Guardian.
On the same day, Popular Science Magazine published a far more authoritative and better researched article explaining any threat to the Svalbard Seed Vault is misconceived.

I hate to seem a “deplorable objector”, but i think inaccurate alarmist articles simply erode credibility, and create morw disent than support.
