Winning Against Evil Isn’t the Reason We Fight It

quote-so-don-t-get-cynical-cynicism-didn-t-put-a-man-on-the-moon-cynicism-has-never-won-a-barack-obama-133-66-31In response to my post on Obama’s words of addressing evil, Cameron Atwood remarks, “This reminds me of (American journalist and activist) Chris Hedges’ comment, ‘I don’t fight fascists because I think I will win. I fight fascists because they are fascists.'”

I’m reminded of that too.

On a lighter note, I remember voting when my kids were young. I always took them to the polls with me, to given them first-hand experience with rights and duties that accompany U.S. citizenship. On one election, I guess it was the 1998 midterm, I took Jake (age 5) on my shoulders, so he could see how I voted. When he learned the following day that my candidate had gotten less than 1% of the popular vote, he was furious with me. “Dad!” he screamed at me. “You voted for a LOSER!”

Of course, I laughed, and explained gently that we vote for what we believe in, not what other people think.

    Craig,

Well done ! Teaching children civic responsibility, especially by example is very important.
