From Guest Blogger Brooke Chaplan: How to Eliminate Pests While Protecting the Planet
Most people experience some type of pest infestation at some point in their lives. Whether it is seasonal ants or entrenched bedbugs, insects can be hard to repel or eliminate. Here are four ways to remove insects without harming the planet.
Adjust Your Lifestyle
If your insect problem is in the beginning stages as you glimpse a few pests around the house now and then, you may be able to take care of the problem with a few basic lifestyle changes. Keep all food in tightly covered containers or in the fridge. Sweep up crumbs and food debris scattered on floors by toddlers and pets. Avoid leaving unscreened windows open. Wipe counter surfaces and tables clean after each meal. Insects need a steady food supply, so make sure they don’t have one.
Use Mechanical Traps
Special traps designed to catch flies, roaches, and ants are available in non-toxic forms. One type lures insects inside the trap and prevents their escape so they can be safely released outdoors. Although, this is not particularly recommended for regular pest elimination. Another type of trap attracts insects and traps them with adhesive, the trap is then discarded. Sealing entryways around windows and doors is also sometimes effective with certain insects. Natural scents like garlic, cinnamon, vinegar, and citrus have been known to keep various bugs away from homes and gardens.
Environmentally-Friendly Products
Products that will not harm humans and pets when used as directed include gels, powders, and solutions that can be placed at known entry points for certain insects. Some companies, such as American Pest Control Inc., know that these eco-friendly products can be applied along window frames and door edges to repel insects. Other non-toxic to human substances can be poisonous to insects or may inhibit their reproductive capabilities.
Sonic Repulsion
Radio waves or audio frequencies that are too high-pitched for human ears may be able to keep insects at bay. A small unit that extends coverage to a specific range can be effective in getting pests to leave and keep them away. Units may be battery-operated or just plugged into a wall socket.
There is no reason to use environmentally-damaging pesticides that are toxic to humans and animals. Try the above methods to rid your home of unwanted insect intruders without putting your loved ones at risk.
