U.S. Senator Working To End Mass Shootings

U.S. Senator Chris Murphy is probably best known for his efforts to enact common-sense gun legislation.  As shown here, he (like 91% of Americans) is a proponent of universal background checks for prospective gun owners.

He’s equally progressive on a number of a wide range of other fronts as well.

Good guy.

And yes, this is devastating.

    Craig,

Tragic as mass shootings are, background checks and gun control laws are just window dressing or “feel good” band-aids.

In a nation with more guns than people, “prohibitionist” ideas just don’t work. Posturing in the US Senate is more about being seen to be “doing something” than actually achieving any real change.

The idea that just passing a law will fix a social phenomenon has never proven successful! In fact, it often creates an horrendously larger and new problem.

Norway, New Zealand, Australia and many other nations with very strict gun laws, have all experienced mass shootings.

On the other hand, Switzerland where most citizens have government sanctioned weapons, has no gun violence.

No individual(s) planning mass slaughter of innocent people will abandon their murderous plans because of Senator Chris Murphy’s proposals.

I can understand your frustration and feeling of helplessness. Equally understandable is the desire to say, “well at least he’s doing something”.

It makes you feel better if the legislature is seen to be doing something, even if in reality the gesture is meaningless and a waste of time.

Curiously, a majority of the perpetrators of mass shootings would have passed background checks very easily. The rest would simply buy firearms from illegal sources or steal weapons.
