Bicycling in Holland Goes All the Way to the Top
I couldn’t have told you that The Netherlands has both a prime minister and a king, but I could have predicted that bicycling would have somehow been involved in a meeting of the two.
Like good people all over the world, the Dutch are doing what they can to live lives of environmental stewardship.
Craig,
The Dutch are no more “moral” when it comes to the environment than any other European. The Netherlands is a very small flat nation, ideally suited to bicycle riding.
The King is a Constitutional Monarch and although pretty informal in habits is a pretty expensive Head of State to maintain, costing far more than the financially astute British Royal family who also act as the Head of State for 15 other independent nations as well as being head of 55 member Commonwealth of Nations.
The King’s brother Friso was a banker and then the chief financial officer of Urenco, a nuclear fuel company. His youngest brother Constantijn works for the Rand Corporation, a policy think tank, and is a director of several oil companies.
But all this is of little consequence as is attempting to draw some comparison of tiny nations with much larger and more complex countries with totally different energy needs and circumstances.
