The Best Way To Deal with Trump Is To Ignore Him–Especially Now
At left we see what news journalist Rachel Maddow believes. It’s funny, that’s exactly what I’ve been thinking these last couple of days as well.
The problem with Trump is that people pay attention to him. He should be ignored, especially when we face a matter of life or death.
Trump wants to divert military spending to build a useless wall? Put children in cages? Establish a “space force?” Go insult some allies and coddle some dictators? Loot the U.S. Treasury and hand the cash to the billionaires? Tear up some peace agreements? Turn wilderness areas into oil fields? Turn away from the world’s efforts to mitigate climate change? Pardon a few white collar felons and war criminals? OK, these are horrible, hateful ideas, but that’s all he’s good for, so let him go for it.
Note, however, that none of these is deadly, at least not immediately and at a large scale. By contrast, a handling of the coronavirus that is both incompetent and dishonest is setting humankind up for a catastrophe like it’s never seen before.
Trump’s appearances on television are not “news briefings” from an informed leader; they are deliberate attempts to mislead Americans at a time where science and truth have never been more critical.
We and our news media are powerless to shut Trump and his team of sycophants up, but certainly we can turn off our cameras.
Now, is this really going to happen, when ratings are so high and there is so much money that derives from covering this s***show? I don’t know. None of us will ever forget what the president of (American television network) CBS said during the 2016 presidential campaign when he saw the emergence of Trump onto the political scene, “This may be terrible for the United States, but it’s fabulous for CBS.”
This is a terrible time in history, but it can get worse if we let Trump take us down with his selfish blatherings and outright lies.
