Boycotting Goya Foods
From: Goya Foods’ Wikipedia page:
On July 9, 2020, following a White House roundtable with Hispanic business and political leaders from across the nation, Goya Foods CEO Robert Unanue said the country was “blessed” to have Donald Trump as president. In response, Twitter users including Democratic U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and former 2020 Democratic Party presidential candidate Julian Castro called for a boycott of the brand.
Unanue pushed back: “So, you’re allowed to talk good or to praise one president [Obama], but you’re not allowed to aid in economic and educational prosperity? And you make a positive comment and all of a sudden, it is not acceptable?”
A few points:
“Aid in economic prosperity?” 61% of Americans can’t afford an unexpected expense of $1000. What’s happening in the stock market is almost completely irrelevant to the common American, as the top 10% owns 92% of the wealth in the stock market.
“Aid in educational prosperity?” There is absolutely nothing good happening in American education; young people’s scores in math and reading are falling sharply.
“You make a positive comment and all of a sudden, it is not acceptable?” A statement, especially one based on lies, that Trump is effectively and honestly working on behalf of the American people, while it may be acceptable to some, is not at all acceptable to at least 60% of the U.S. population. It’s offensive, and it makes us angry. If you don’t like that, too damned bad.
Btw, as CEO of a $1.5 billion company, it might have been a good idea to consider that in advance, so as to prevent it from becoming a $1.2 billion company.
