California: Automakers Have 15 More Years To Sell Gas-Powered Vehicles
California is following suit with various parts of the EU in phasing out gasoline and diesel.
A reader notes: I’m fully supportive of this, but it has to come with a massive upgrade of the U.S. energy grid.
That’s not completely true. Because of the extremely low efficiency of internal combustion engines (20 – 25%) and the extremely high efficiency of charging and discharging batteries via electric motors (over 80%), we could electrify every vehicle on Earth with an increase of electrical capacity of only about 14%. Now, 14% isn’t nothing, but it’s far less than most people understand.
I’m proud to live in California. If something progressive is going to happen in the U.S., it’s very likely to start in the Golden State.
