Why Trump Is Still “A Thing”
The cartoon here depicts something that is sickeningly real: Trump, acknowledged by GOP leaders to be a liar and criminal, continues to be the voice of the party.
Congressional Republicans need to deal with the fact Trump enjoys cult-like adoration from their voters, who will rebel against anyone who disavows their leader. Trump, true to form, plays this for all it’s worth, e.g., doing everything he can to ruin the careers of any dissenters.
Trump has successfully tapped into a deep vein of right-wing extremism: racial hatred, xenophobia, the “stolen election” narrative and other conspiracy theories, anti-science, pro-guns and all the rest–all built around his incredible capacity to rally people around these causes with laughably disprovable disinformation.
The world hoped that once Trump was removed from office, he would become increasingly irrelevant as time passed. Didn’t happen.
