Support for Trump Isn’t Flagging
The United States finds itself at an impasse.
Donald Trump is no longer in office, but almost half the country thinks the election was rigged in favor of his opponent, and that justice won’t be served until he is returned to the White House. 30 different judges saw no merit in this when law suits were filed before the election was certified, and each one dismissed the cases, yet this means absolutely nothing to them. They’re remaining steadfast, and there seem to be no facts that will move them away from this fantasy.
But of course, the “stolen election” narrative is only one example, one out of hundreds, that define who these people are and what they believe.
At left we see another. The same group, again, almost half of the country, watched the live, on-camera interview that Trump did last year with Dr. Deborah Birx, one of his top advisors in disease control, and saw nothing wrong with the president’s line of thinking; they were quite comfortable being led into a pandemic by a man whose knowledge base was on full display here. Yes, the other half of the country (not to mention the entire rest of the world), was horrified, but again, Trump’s base shows essentially no movement away from their full devotion and commitment to him.
Those in search of additional examples of the dual nature of the American electorate need only turn on Fox News and listen to what is being presented on any given topic: masks and vaccinations don’t work, government is the enemy of personal freedom, the Democrats are coming for your guns, Biden’s mentally incompetent, the economy is crashing, colleges are turning our students into socialists, hard-working people are being taxed to death so lazy people can sit around and collect welfare, abortion is murder, mainstream news from sources all around the globe is fake if it’s critical of Trump, and gun violence is extremely rare, and, in any case, it’s a small price to pay for the inviolability of the Second Amendment.
None of this is going anywhere. And, as the legal screws are turned and criminal prosecution against Trump goes into high gear, we can only expect it to get worse.
