Lawyers Who Filed “Big Lie” Lawsuits Punished by Federal Judge

From this:

The wheels of justice may take a while to get moving, but moving they are.

Attorneys who filed a lawsuit in Colorado seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 election have been sanctioned (legalese for punished) by the Judge overseeing that proceeding.

I’m an attorney myself. Sanctions are the principal, front-line means by which our legal system attempts to assert some degree of control over attorneys who abuse the power that comes with their law license. In this case, the Judge is sanctioning Trump’s lawyers for filing a lawsuit in bad faith — a lawsuit supported neither by any facts, nor by any existing law, nor any good-faith argument to modify the law.

As the Washington Post summarizes: “In a scathing 68-page opinion, Magistrate Judge N. Reid Neureiter found that the lawyers made little effort to corroborate information they had included in the suit, which argued there had been a vast national conspiracy to steal the election from President Donald Trump.”

Who knows how many other attorneys filed groundless, bad-faith lawsuits.  Let’s hope this is the first of many such actions. In any case, it’s a good start.
