Floridians Will Buy Some Pretty Asinine Ideas, But They Seem To Have Crossed a Line
This is proof that there is hope for the United States. It’s easy to believe that a significant percentage of Americans will believe anything they come across that supports what they already believe, regardless of how inane. It is this phenomenon that gives us our anti-vaxxers, climate deniers, and stolen election believers.
Now, some good news: what is happening in Florida is demonstrating that there actually is a limit to these people’s credulity. Where is that limit? The agonizing death associated with COVID-19.
Florida is the epicenter for the disease among the 50 states, with a record 22,783 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, its highest single-day case count since the pandemic began. The state’s ultra-right wing governor refuses to follow CDC guidelines, and is, in fact, going the other way, making it illegal for local governments to issue mask mandates.
Floridians are conservative politically, but here they’re calling bullshit. Good for them. That’s heartening.
