Is the U.S. Entering a New Age?

by Antoine Claudet, photogravure, 1860s

I heartily recommend A.Word.A.Day from wordsmith.org.  Great boost to the vocab, and lots of other insight, including “A thought for today,” from the writings of someone born on this day:

Those who compare the age in which their lot has fallen with a golden age which exists only in imagination, may talk of degeneracy and decay; but no man who is correctly informed as to the past will be disposed to take a morose or desponding view of the present. -Thomas Babington Macaulay (pictured), author and statesman (25 Oct 1800-1859)

This strikes me as generally, though not always true.

The people who witnessed the fall of Rome, the Spanish Inquisition, or the rise of Hitler can rightfully take a “morose or desponding view of the present,” IMO.

I’m hoping that the United States can dispose of Trump before we have to join those folks in history.
