Fascism Has Failed to Arrive in the U.S.
At this point it appears that although Trump’s campaign messages are appealing to a significant number at this point in the United States, they don’t carry the day. They lost by three million votes in 2016 and seven million in 2020.
It also appears at this point that the coup attempted by Team Trump, i.e., overturning the 2020 election results, has failed. Fourteen months after the election, and review by 60 different courts, there is still no evidence of significant voter fraud, and all the grossly illegal efforts made to decertify Biden’s victory have not gained any traction. Even better, the scintillating details of these acts of treason continue to come out as various investigations proceed.
It’s already clear that there is huge criminal liability on the part of some people in Trump’s orbit, yet how the justice system will proceed, and to what effect, can’t be foretold. What is clear is that this particular coup attempt has come a cropper.
But will another follow? That goes back to our justice system; if it fails to prosecute what just happened, it’s sending an engraved invitation to the next would-be dictator.
In addition to Trump himself, there is so much sociopathy in the top ranks of the GOP that it’s possible that attacking U.S. democracy may become an ongoing characteristic of American life.
