It would be a mistake to change every bulb to a CFL.
In places where lamps are on for long intervals, replacing incandescent bulbs with CFLs makes sense and it should be done both for environmental and economic reasons. However, using CFLs in closets or other places where they would be on for only a very few minutes every day makes no sense whatever. In those situations, only incandescent bulbs make sense since they are used too little for the energy used to be significant. Also, the life of CFLs is considerably shortened if they are frequently turned on and off and it requires more energy and materials to manufacture CFLs.
Also, do not overlook traditional fluorescent tubes; they are somewhat more efficient than CFSs and have a longer life. In places where traditional fluorescent tubes can be used, they are a better choice than CFLs. It is unclear why they are being overlooked.
