From Guest Blogger Mary Ann Keel: Working Together For Nature through Green Charities

Green Charities Most people, either in the general public or as a part of governmental initiatives, would agree that the environment is very important and that we all need to work together to protect it. Talking about working to protect the environment is one thing, but actually taking actions towards preserving nature takes effort that not everybody is willing to make.

It’s getting better, and more people are becoming aware of the impact of their actions on the environment and on future generations, largely thanks to the hard work of a number of great charities and organizations that are working hard towards spreading awareness. When someone takes actions that are dangerous for the environment, it’s often not to be malicious but rather that they are simply ignorant and they don’t know any better. That’s why it is incredibly important to help spread awareness.

One of the best things you can do for the environment is to start making greener choices in your day to day life and supporting companies that are committed to the environment. If you want to take an extra step, consider supporting some of these green charities so that they can help spread awareness to people who haven’t yet been enlightened to the importance of working together for a sustainable future.

Many charities understand the importance of being green, even if they are completely unrelated to the environment in their focus. We’re going to specifically talk about charities that are directly involved with work that impacts the environment in a positive way. Charity Navigator is a great website to fine more and to browse them based on specific criteria.

World Wildlife – Protecting Animals

As the apex predator, it’s our job as humans to take care of the animals that we share this planet with. Animals can’t speak up and tell us when they need help, it’s our responsibility to take the necessary measures to be there for them through diligent enforcement of animal rights, conservation, and simply remembering that they have a claim to this planet as well – it’s not just ours. World Wildlife is one of the leading charities when it comes to looking after animals, with over 1300 different projects all around the world. They have been in controversies over the years, but sometimes that just comes with the territory. Their campaign to encourage people to adopt an endangered species is one of the best charitable causes in terms of protecting the animals on this planet.

Greenpeace Fund – Raising Money for a Greener Tomorrow

Unlike the World Wildlife Fund that we just discussed, Greenpeace doesn’t take support money from corporate interests or government funding; they thrive entirely off the support of individuals and other foundations. They have good reviews on Charity Navigator, which is an excellent starting-point to determine if a particular organization is worth your time and money or not. Greenpeace is very well known for their work all around the world in fighting to protect nature.

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society

Sea Shepherd is dedicated to the conservation of marine life. They’re on the more aggressive side, which makes them controversial with some of their actions, but they are fighting to protect sea life and that’s an important cause whether or not you agree completely with how they go about it. There was a TV series on the Animal Planet channel a few years ago that documented Sea Shepherd and their fight against Japanese whalers.

Wildlife Warriors by Steve Irwin

Steve Irwin and his wife Terri have dedicated their lives to protecting and caring for animals. Steve shot to stardom after appearing on talk shows with animals in North America, and hosting his own programs as well. Mr. Irwin tragically passed away, but not before creating Wildlife Warriors, a legacy that his entire family can be incredibly proud of. His daughter and wife continue the never-ending task of caring for animals, and Wildlife Warriors reminds one of the best charities in the world when it comes to looking after all of the other creatures that share this planet with us.

Final Thoughts & Other Charities To Check Out

There are plenty of other charities and organizations that are working incredibly hard to protect nature and all of its animals. It can be a thankless job at times, when you’re constantly battling against corporations and people who are only looking after their own best interests – but when you look into the eyes of a rescued animal or you have a moment to embrace the beautiful sunset, it serves as a reminder that it’s all worthwhile.

It’s also worth noting there are some other very humane charities out there, even if they don’t deal directly with nature or animals. For example, Cars for Cancer – cancer charity is a great cause, because everyone knows someone who’s been impacted by this tragic illness. Also, there’s something to be said about taking care of other people, because we’re all in this together and while it’s important to look after the environment, there are also people who need help and Mater Prize Homes does just that. There are also plenty of great local charities all around the world, and organizations like The United Way and World Vision that may not be perfect but they still manage to get a lot done. Do you know any other great organizations and charities we should add to the list? Let us know!

It doesn’t matter which part of the world you are breathing in. What matters is are you aware of your actions, the choices you make or the beliefs you are holding up. Really, being the most intelligent species it’s our duty to sustain the stability of the planet. I fully support the opinion this post asserts – A thankless job it is but it becomes worth trying when you see that look on the face of the animal you just rescued or when you see a plant growing up with a new leaf everyday. Go green. Plant a Tree to enhance. To enhance everything.
