Sustainable Eating

Sustainable EatingHumanitarian and 2GreenEnergy supporter Leo Schwaiger (pictured) sent me this video, with subject line: “The Most Important Speech You’ll Ever Hear–Gary Yourofsky,” and commented, “You may like him.”

Yes, he’s amazing.  Personally, the highest I eat on the food chain is fish (as well as the products of live mammals and birds, e.g., eggs and cheese), but not purely for reasons of morality.  As I explained to my kids when they were young, it’s better for the cow, but it’s also better for my health, and for the planet.  The consumption of mammals is the largest single component of the environmental degradation we’re wreaking on this planet, and thus giving up meat is a win-win-win.

But why draw the line just above fish?  I have no good reason.  There is no doubt that fish suffer (though I doubt that’s true of small sea-based invertebrates like shrimp, scallops and clams, and I go thorough a lot of them).  I also freely acknowledge that our fishing practices, in the main, are clearly unsustainable, though I try to use the “Seafood Watch” app on my phone so as to not participate in the very worst of this.

Thanks, Leo.  I hope readers will check it out.
