Maybe This Isn’t Really Happening
If you had come to me 20 years ago and wanted to bet me that one of the two main political parties in the U.S. would be actively working to destroy the environment, I would have bet you $1000 against a dime that you were wrong.
This whole Trump phenomenon is so improbable that it really does seem like a dream, i.e., a nightmare, and that we’re going to wake up any moment and find that children are not being locked in cages, we’re not dismantling public education, we’re not pouring toxins into our streams and rivers, and our president isn’t telling us that the entirety of the intelligence and media communities has become so many liars and criminals.
This is why we see the word “surreal” used so often; there is a quality to life here right now that suggests that this isn’t really happening.

Hmmm…, I don’t know how to put this, but y’know the “intelligence and media communities has always been mostly liars and criminals !
In the past, most Presidents have been too scared and far too complicit, to openly name and shame these powerful institutions and the individuals in power.
Edgar J Hoover began in 1924 and intimidated, blackmailed or conspired with every US president until he died in office in 1972.
Since 1947 the CIA (just one of 38 US Intelligence Agencies) has lied, murdered, trafficked drugs,blackmailed, extorted, conspired, imprisoned illegally, subverted justice, tortured, spied, interfered illegally in nearly every nation’s election processes, (friend, ally and foe alike), conspired to overthrow governments(even democratically elected) protected domestic and foreign criminals, even those guilty on genocide and crimes against humanity.
The CIA has waged secret and illegal wars funded without congressional approval and generally acted with impunity !
The record of the media is little better. The US media was founded on lies propaganda and bias from the time of the revolutionary war, treatment of Indians, the Maine incident and throughout every decade.
The only redeeming feature of the media is anyone can publish a newspaper, but today’s mass media is controlled by a narrow group of self interested owners and employees.
The advent of social media has finally allowed one President to free himself from the constraints of such powerful covert forces as the FBI, CIA and mass media and take his case directly to the people.
If you believe that before President Trump, US political life enjoyed an intelligence and media community full of blameless, upright individuals carefully exercising power with integrity at all times, you must be either incredibly naive or inhabiting a different planet !
It’s not that they were perfect, but Trump is making them seem way worse than they are. Although a lot of the media does lie once in a while, they still have a lot of truth.
