Radio Show “Clean Up Your Act” Deals with Sustainability, Renewable Energy
| November 2, 2011 | Posted by Craig Shields under Renewables - Business |
Here’s a radio interview I did the other day on a station in Cedar Rapids, IA. The show is cleverly called “Clean Up Your Act,” and deals with hundreds of different issues associated with sustainability and clean energy, in particular. I thought this gentleman did a good job at peppering me with sharp, relevant questions.

Talking About Clean Energy on the Jack Taylor Radio Show
| August 20, 2011 | Posted by Craig Shields under Renewables - Business |

I was on the Jack Taylor Radio Show in Chicago this morning, and in the process became one of his more than 55,000 guests that have ranged from Marlon Brando to Presidents Ford and Reagan. Yes, Mr. Taylor has been at this a long time; he came to WGN-TV in 1958, the year after I got out of diapers.
I don’t take the time to study up on the individual personalities on these radio shows beforehand – and in most cases, this is fine; I normally get softball-type questions with which I can do anything I want. And I usually get a few words of introduction in advance: the type of audience, the style of questions, the focus of the interview, but here, … no. Without a syllable of preparatory talk, I’m being grilled full-force by a guy with 55,000+ practice rounds under his belt. First question: “What qualifies you as an expert? What are your credentials?”
Of course, I don’t bill myself as an expert in renewable energy. If listeners conclude that I know what I’m talking about, that’s fine, but I’m most certainly not going to be asserting that. “I’m flattered that you think of me in that way, Jack, but if I have a talent here, it’s asking good questions of people who know far more about this than I ever will. And that’s why my book…. ”
But I think it came off well; I’ll post a link to the interview as soon as it’s available.

Craig Shields Talks Clean Energy on the Outdoor Talk Network
| August 20, 2011 | Posted by Craig Shields under Renewables - Science |
Here’s a one-hour radio show (minus commercials) I did the other day called The Outdoor Talk Network, with host Jim Slinsky. 53 stations in 24 states pick it up each week.
Jim is a deer hunter, and played a piece of music as an intro called “When the Bullet Hits the Bone.” Having said that, he’s a remarkably warm and passionate guy. I’m not sure I understand hunters, but that’s another issue…

Talking Clean Energy on Talk Radio in Kentucky — Coal Country!

The other day I was asked to do an hour-long interview on KMST, talk radio in Mt. Sterling, KY. Here it is: pretty wide-ranging discussion of the need for clean energy, the potential solutions. Knowing that a great number of listeners are into coal, I tried to be compassionate but firm on the subject.

I was the guest on a really good hour-long radio interview this afternoon on KMMS-AM, a popular talk/news station in Bozeman, MT. Host Larry Stancil and I didn’t agree on everything (in fact, we agreed on very little) but we got along fine, and I think everyone learned a great deal. We only had one caller, and he was extremely civil.
To be honest, I was surprised; I was braced for a brouhaha, as I had been told that some of those folks don’t like environmentalists telling them they can’t shoot wolves, etc. But cooler heads prevailed. I’ll post a link to the show when I receive it.

Talking about Renewable Energy on Statewide Nevada
| January 25, 2011 | Posted by Craig Shields under Geothermal |

I have to say that the hosts of these radio shows on which I’m a guest ask some good questions. The fellow this morning, Rodd Stowell of Statewide Nevada (syndicated to 150 stations) asked a great deal about geothermal. “This sounds really promising,” he said. “One local plant started off with four holes, and now they have 12. What’s not to like about that?”
I explained that the answer is actually implied in the question. “Note that they didn’t know what they’d find when they drilled their first hole; it’s oddly reminiscent of oil exploration 100 years ago. If technology existed to tell them what they’d find in advance, they would have drilled all 12 simultaneously. But there was a chance they’d come up empty. Not only do you have to find heat, but you have to find porosity between two points far underground, and that’s iffy,” I replied. Read More
